Product Safety Warnings

Last updated: August 14, 2026

Your safety is our top priority. Candle making is a rewarding craft, but it involves heat, hot wax, and tools that can cause injury if not used properly. Please read and follow all safety warnings before using our products.

1. General Safety Precautions

  • Adult supervision required. Candle making is not suitable for children under 14. Children aged 14-18 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area. Melting wax and adding fragrances can release fumes. Use a kitchen exhaust fan or work near an open window.
  • Never leave melting wax unattended. Wax can overheat and ignite. Always monitor the temperature with a thermometer.
  • Keep away from flammable materials. Keep your workspace clear of paper, fabric, curtains, and other flammable items.
  • Use heat-resistant surfaces. Always work on a heat mat or protected surface. Do not place hot tools directly on countertops.
  • Wear protective equipment. Use heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and an apron when handling hot wax and tools.
  • Keep children and pets away from your candle making workspace at all times.

2. Wax Melting Safety

2.1 Temperature Guidelines

  • Soy Wax: Melt to 170-185°F (76-85°C). Never exceed 200°F (93°C).
  • Paraffin Wax: Melt to 170-190°F (76-88°C). Never exceed 200°F (93°C).
  • Beeswax: Melt to 145-175°F (63-80°C). Never exceed 185°F (85°C).

2.2 Wax Fire Prevention

  • Flash point: Wax has a flash point (the temperature at which it can ignite). Never heat wax above its flash point.
  • NEVER use water on a wax fire. If wax ignites, turn off the heat source, cover with a metal lid or baking sheet to smother the flame, or use a Class B fire extinguisher.
  • Use a double boiler or melting pot. Never melt wax directly on a stovetop or open flame. Always use a water bath or dedicated wax melter.
  • Never overfill melting containers. Fill no more than 2/3 full to prevent spills and overflow.

3. Fragrance & Essential Oil Safety

  • Skin contact: Fragrance and essential oils can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Wear gloves when handling. If skin contact occurs, wash with soap and water.
  • Eye contact: If oils get in your eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
  • Ingestion: Keep oils away from mouth. Do not ingest. If swallowed, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) immediately.
  • Inhalation: Work in a well-ventilated area. Some fragrances may cause headaches or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.
  • Pets: Some essential oils are toxic to pets (especially cats and birds). Research pet-safe fragrances before use.
  • Flash point: Add fragrance oil at the recommended temperature (typically 185°F) — adding oil above its flash point can cause ignition.
  • Storage: Store oils in a cool, dark place away from heat sources and children. Keep containers tightly sealed.

4. Tool & Equipment Safety

  • Melting pitchers: Always use stainless steel or heat-safe glass pitchers. Never use plastic or damaged containers.
  • Thermometers: Use a digital or candy thermometer rated for high temperatures. Never guess the wax temperature.
  • Molds: Silicone molds are heat-safe up to 450°F. Do not use plastic molds for hot wax pouring.
  • Wick trimmers: Keep blades sharp and away from children. Cut wicks to 1/4 inch before each burn.
  • Heat mats: Use heat-resistant mats under all melting and pouring equipment. Do not use towels or fabric.
  • Electrical equipment: Keep electrical cords away from water and heat. Inspect cords regularly for damage.

5. Burn Safety (Finished Candles)

When burning candles you have made:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep candles away from flammable materials, drafts, and air currents.
  • Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch to prevent excessive flame and soot.
  • Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
  • Stop burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains to prevent container breakage.
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Never extinguish a candle with water — use a snuffer or lid.

6. First Aid

  • Wax burn: Cool the burn immediately with cool (not cold) running water for 20 minutes. Do not peel wax from skin — let it cool and hardify, then gently remove. Seek medical attention for large or severe burns.
  • Oil skin contact: Wash with soap and water. Apply a cold compress if irritation occurs.
  • Oil eye contact: Flush with water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
  • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Emergency: Call 911 for severe burns, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness.
